What is Shockwave Therapy?

shockwave-image1-1
Shockwave Therapy or Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive clinical solution for managing a wide range of musculoskeletal and soft body tissue conditions. Its healing mechanism relies on the activation and stimulation of the body’s natural healing processes to –
  • Sharply reduce pain conditions
  • Improve rate of healing
  • Reduce recovery time
The acoustic waves generated by shockwave therapy help increase blood flow to the area of injury, which reduces inflammation and stimulates the production of collagen.

What Can Shockwave Therapy Be Used For?

  • Fractures
  • Wounds
  • Neuropathy
  • Arthritis
  • Tendinopathy
  • Tendon Tears
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • Osteonecrosis
  • Tightness
  • Bone spur syndrome
  • Calcifications on tendons
  • Ligament injuries
  • Capsulitis
  • Synovitis and bursitis

Types of Shockwave

shockwave-image2

Focal ESWT utilises a single pulse with a smaller focal point that reaches up to 12cm in depth depending on the attachments used. This is a high energy and fast impulse therapy that is precise to the area of concern and maintains its energy throughout.

Focal ESWT is a proven method for stimulating tissue growth and repair with greater pinpoint accuracy for conditions that appear within the deeper layers of the body.

Defocused shockwave, or planar shockwave, is a type of electromagnetically generated shockwave which delivers concentrated energy at a more superficial level. This concentrated energy promotes accelerated wound healing, allowing practitioners to overcome slow-healing or non-healing wounds such as chronic diabetic foot ulcers.

Radial Shockwave Therapy Utilises a low energy density and slow impulse wave to target larger superficial areas
The use of radial pressure waves is popular and one of the most widely used for general tightness and mild pain in the body. Radial ESWT is designed to target larger superficial areas, with a low energy density and slow impulse wave that penetrates no more than 4cm deep. With the flexibility of different contact assemblies, radial shockwave (RSWT) is a comfortable and effective method for a variety of soft tissue and muscular conditions. As ISMST-certified shockwave practitioners, we find that RSWT offers the most significant and long-lasting improvement if used in combination with focused shockwave (FSWT) and other therapeutic modalities.

Experts in Shockwave Technology

Not all shockwave therapy machines are the same and the quality of the device can affect the outcome of your recovery. This is why East Coast Podiatry only uses Storz Medical devices.

Storz is a German precision engineering company that has been manufacturing specialised medical equipment for over 70 years. Their experience and expertise have made them the world leader in the research and development of shockwave technology.

Our expert podiatrists also undergo frequent specialised training programmes to ensure that East Coast Podiatry stays up to date with new advancements in technology, all so we can provide our patients with the best in service and highest quality of recovery.
