Plantar Warts are “cauliflower-like” growths on the skin of the feet. They are also known as verrucae and are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) which enters the skin through cracks or other breaks.
Although plantar warts are found on the feet, there are many types of human papillomavirus. This virus is highly contagious and can cause warts to develop on other parts of the body such as your fingers, neck, and eyelids. Avoid scratching or peeling at existing warts to minimise the spread within your body and to other individuals.
A freezing agent like liquid nitrogen is applied to the wart. Your podiatrist might numb the affected area beforehand as the process can be painful, and multiple sessions may be required for a successful resolution depending on the size of the wart.
Your podiatrist may perform debridement of any dead skin before cryotherapy, to ensure that the freezing agent is able to penetrate further into the wart and increase the effectiveness of the cryotherapy.
Wart needling involves the repeated pricking of the wart with a hollow needle. This procedure activates the patient’s immune system to engage and destroy the virus responsible for the wart, encouraging organic healing with minimal discomfort and downtime.
