An ingrown nail occurs when the edge of your nail grows into the skin and flesh around your nail causing pain, and in some cases, infection.
While ingrown nails can occur in individuals of all genders and ages, some studies suggest that teenagers and young adults are more likely to develop this issue. This is because they are more likely to trim their nails poorly and/or actively participate in sports that may result in physical trauma to their feet.
As ingrown nails grow deeper into the skin, they can puncture the skin, causing a wound that is easily susceptible to infections.
If left ignored, cellulitis can set in, causing severe swelling and redness. Infection from ingrown toenails can even spread to the underlying bones of the toe and become a life-threatening condition. If your toe is swollen, changing in colour, producing pus, or causing you great discomfort, please see a podiatrist immediately.
In severe cases or if infection has set in, your podiatrists will perform a gentle and minimally invasive procedure to remove the offending nail shard and provide pain relief. This procedure can be done relatively fast and takes around 15 minutes.
This particular method does not require stitches and has a reduced recovery time, allowing you to resume your normal daily activities as soon as possible.
