What is Plantar Fasciitis?

The plantar fascia is a band of tissue that stretches from the front of the foot to the heel. It is responsible for supporting our body weight and provides shock absorption during movement. Overuse of the plantar fascia is one of the most common causes of foot pain, and inflammation and deterioration that occurs, as a result, is known as plantar fasciitis. If left unresolved, frequent stress on this body part will cause the injury to worsen. In severe cases, surgical intervention may be the only available option left.

Common Symptoms of Plantar Fasciitis

  • Pain on underside of heel
  • Sharp pain upon palpation of or around the heel
  • Pain is most intense when getting out of bed or standing up after prolonged sitting
  • Presence of swelling below the heel and around the ankle
  • Pain typically occurs after physical activity

Who is At Risk for Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis affects individuals of all ages and genders, but certain groups of people are more likely to develop this condition than others. Risk factors include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Being pregnant
  • Being overweight or obese
  • Physically active people, particularly those between the age of 40 and 70
  • Having flat feet
  • Having high arched feet
  • Wearing shoes that fit poorly or lack adequate support
  • Working in an occupation that spends a lot of time on their feet e.g. cabin crew, healthcare staff and teachers
  • Running or exercising on hard surfaces
  • Frequent short bursts of physical activity
  • Having diabetes

Effective Plantar Fasciitis Management Is a Twofold Process

At East Coast Podiatry, this is accomplished with the utilisation of advanced medical therapies such as shockwave and custom orthotics.

Step One: Alleviate Symptoms & Reduce Discomfort

Our Swiss-made Medical focal shockwave system (FSWT) utilises true shockwave technology to direct a highly focused beam of energy capable of promoting regeneration at the cellular level.

This allows for the greatest precision and highest intensity in targeted healing, improving clinical efficacy and greatly reducing recovery times.

With the flexibility of different contact assemblies, radial shockwave (RSWT) is a comfortable and effective method for a variety of soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions. As ISMST-certified shockwave practitioners, we find that RSWT offers the most significant and long-lasting improvement if used in combination with focused shockwave (FSWT) and other therapeutic modalities.

Step Two: Address Underlying Issues

Deformities in musculoskeletal structure are frequently responsible for your heel pain. Even minor issues can cause certain joints or tissues to experience greater stress or wear and tear over time due to their cumulative effects.

Through the use of customised medical orthotics, podiatrists are able to correct your feet and posture, addressing many of the underlying issues responsible for the pain in your heel and other parts of your body.

5-Year Warranty for Prescription Orthotics

Our clinical diagnosis is based on our proprietary advanced musculoskeletal and bio-mechanical assessment protocols.

Our unique design and manufacturing process is accompanied by a 12-to-18-month review process, all of which are backed by a 5-year warranty that is unmatched by any other practice today.
