What Are Plantar Warts?

Plantar Warts are “cauliflower-like” growths on the skin of the feet. They are also known as verrucae and are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) which enters the skin through cracks or other breaks.

Although plantar warts are found on the feet, there are many types of human papillomavirus. This virus is highly contagious and can cause warts to develop on other parts of the body such as your fingers, neck, and eyelids. Avoid scratching or peeling at existing warts to minimise the spread within your body and to other individuals.

Symptoms

  • Small rough growths on the bottom of the foot
  • Hard thickened surface skin
  • Small black spots on the surface of the growth
  • Pain or discomfort when pressure is applied

Plantar Wart Management

Those suffering from warts sometimes utilise over-the-counter solutions such as salicylic acid to ‘burn’ the wart and surrounding flesh for a quick home remedy. However, this treatment can take weeks to months for the wart to be resolved and is not recommended for those with diabetes or compromised immune systems as it can lead to infection. Individuals with warts should always seek professional advice to avoid spreading this contagious condition or contracting further serious side effects from poor management. Our podiatrists use two main methods when managing warts, which will be prescribed depending on their assessment of your condition.

Cryotherapy

A freezing agent like liquid nitrogen is applied to the wart. Your podiatrist might numb the affected area beforehand as the process can be painful, and multiple sessions may be required for a successful resolution depending on the size of the wart.

Your podiatrist may perform debridement of any dead skin before cryotherapy, to ensure that the freezing agent is able to penetrate further into the wart and increase the effectiveness of the cryotherapy.

Wart Needling

Wart needling involves the repeated pricking of the wart with a hollow needle. This procedure activates the patient’s immune system to engage and destroy the virus responsible for the wart, encouraging organic healing with minimal discomfort and downtime.

This particular approach utilises the body’s healing processes to address the problem, with the following advantages —

  • Highly effective
  • Little to no discomfort
  • Fewer clinic sessions
  • Chemical-free healing
  • Minimal downtime
  • Scar-free
