What is Flat Foot?

Flat Foot, or pes planus, occurs when the arch of the foot flattens and appears flush with the rest of the foot. This is a very common foot type in Singapore as Asians are more likely to have this type of foot due to greater ligament laxity.

It’s important to note that flat foot is not a clinical diagnosis but simply a common variation of the existing foot types.

What Are The Different Flat Foot Types?

Congenital Flat Foot

This type of flat foot is hereditary and can present in children as young as 2 years old. Many individuals with congenital flat foot may also present with hypermobility, a condition where the patient’s joints and ligaments bend more than the usual range of motion.

Adult-Acquired Flat Foot

As the name suggests, this type of flat foot occurs later in life often due to issues such as injury, arthritis, posterior tibial tendon dysfunction, or even diabetes.

Why Should I Manage My Flat Foot?

Although having flat feet is not a medical condition, it is a foot type that increases the risk of certain conditions such as:

  • Ankle instability and sprains
  • Plantar fasciitis and ruptures
  • Achilles tendinopathy and ruptures
  • Hip, knee, and/or back pain
  • Foot and ankle pain
  • Bunions
  • Ankle or foot swelling
  • Corns and callus development
  • Increased risk of falling
  • Recurrent pain when standing and walking
  • Ingrown toenail formation
  • Scoliosis

How Does Podiatry Manage Flat Foot?

Your podiatrist will conduct a thorough assessment protocol including gait analysis and body weight distribution to determine how your flat feet affects the rest of your body.

After assessing your feet and overall impact they have on your lifestyle, your podiatrist will design a pair of customised of insoles. These will provide support for your foot type and overall musculoskeletal structure, while addressing any underlying clinical conditions caused by your flat feet.

Custom Insoles

A pair of podiatrist-prescribed custom insoles are different from other insoles, even those that are supposedly designed specifically for flat feet. As professional clinicians, podiatrists are trained to make even the smallest of clinical adjustments to your insoles down to the details such as your gait, weight distribution, or degree of pronation.

This means that your insole is fully customised to address the causes for your pain and your specific medical conditions, providing you with the maximum level of support and rehabilitation.
