What Are Ankle Sprains?

Ankle sprains typically occur when ligaments that hold your ankle bones and joints together roll or move awkwardly or unnaturally.

It is estimated that up to 85% of ankle injuries in Singapore are caused by sprains.

Injuries to the ankle come in two forms, acute and chronic.

  • Acute injuries are caused by sudden trauma, falls, or other accidents
  • Chronic injuries are caused by constant stress over time which eventually accumulates into a sprain or other injuries

Once you’ve had an ankle injury, the chances of you suffering a repeat injury are much higher.

Ankle Sprains Can Be Caused By

flat-foot
  • Flat Foot
Flat feet place a great amount of stress on the sole and ankle of the feet, causing them to roll inwards. This increases the risk of tripping, falling, spraining the ankle, or a combination of these.

Due to the prevalence of flat foot in Singapore, it is a contributing factor to many, if not most, of the ankle sprain cases we see.

peroneal-tendon-injuries
  • Peroneal Tendon Injuries
The peroneal tendon connects the muscles of the calf to the bones of the foot. Injury to this tendon is usually caused by overuse from activities that require frequent ankle motion such as running or jumping.

When this tendon is injured or weakened, the ankle may experience swelling, pain, increased ankle instability, and increased risk of sprains.

unresolved-fractures-xray
  • Unresolved fractures
Fractures are breaks in the bone that can range from tiny microscopic cracks to where the skin is pierced from a broken piece. It is not uncommon for tiny fractures that happen due to repeated trauma over time to go unnoticed. Fractures are not only painful, but unresolved stress fractures can cause instability, causing more falls and injuries such as sprains, scrapes and tears.

Effective Ankle Sprain Management Is a Twofold Process

At East Coast Podiatry, this is accomplished with the utilisation of advanced medical therapies such as shockwave and custom orthotics.

Step One: Alleviate Symptoms & Reduce Discomfort

Our Swiss-made Medical focal shockwave system (FSWT) utilises true shockwave technology to direct a highly focused beam of energy capable of promoting regeneration at the cellular level. This allows for the greatest precision and highest intensity in targeted healing, improving clinical efficacy and greatly reducing recovery times.
With the flexibility of different contact assemblies, radial shockwave (RSWT) is a comfortable and effective method for a variety of soft tissue and musculoskeletal conditions. As ISMST-certified shockwave practitioners, we find that RSWT offers the most significant and long-lasting improvement if used in combination with focused shockwave (FSWT) and other therapeutic modalities.

Step Two: Address Underlying Issues

Ankle Sprains can be caused by previous ankle injuries or underlying issues such as flat feet, impaired proprioception, and ankle instability.

Podiatrists are able to correct your feet and posture through the use of customised medical orthotics. This will address many of the underlying issues responsible for your ankle sprains.

For severe cases of ankle injuries or instability, our podiatrists may prescribe an Ankle Foot Orthotic alongside a Customised Foot Orthotic to ensure maximum clinical efficacy.

This combination of supportive devices improves stabilisation of the foot and ankle as a whole, allowing patients to walk without major impairment.

5-Year Warranty for Prescription Orthotics

Our clinical diagnosis is based on our proprietary advanced musculoskeletal and bio-mechanical assessment protocols.
